How Often Workers Use Generative AI
Adoption says who has tried generative AI at work; this stack says how often they use it. The bottom band is the share of employed adults who used it every day of the past week, the middle band those who used it on some days, and the top band those who have used it for work before but not last week. The whole stack is the adoption rate. Daily use has grown at about the pace of adoption, which means use is deepening as it spreads rather than a growing crowd of one-time triers. What does it show?
The habit is forming: one worker in seven uses it every day, and that band has grown with adoption rather than lagging it.
Methodology
Three series from the Generative Artificial Intelligence Adoption Tracker (Bick, Blandin and Deming, Real-Time Population Survey, via FRED), which nest: the share of employed adults who have ever used generative AI for work, the share who used it in the past week, and the share who used it every day of the past week. The bands are their differences — daily users; people who used it on some days last week but not every day; and people who have used it for work before but not in the past week — so the stack's height is the adoption rate and its bottom band is the habit. Quarterly, from 2024 Q3, self-reported; 'daily' means every working day of the reference week, so a four-day-a-week user counts in the middle band. Daily use has grown at about the pace of overall adoption, which is the tracker's own reading: use is deepening, not only spreading.
